New Democratic Dimensions
is a group of independent Democrats
supportive of the great tradition of the Democratic Party. Working
within the party, we are determined to develop both a vision and a
framework for the future.
Volunteers in the Carter/Mondale campaign seeking to
revitalize individual and grassroots involvement to provide needed
bridges between polarized segments of the Democratic Party founded NDD
in 1981. Our group is looking to new methods of encouraging and
galvanizing political action. Combining traditional formats such as
educational forums, conferences, and cable TV programming along with the
Internet we are reaching out to the community providing information to
educate the voting population. In addition NDD sponsors public debates
hoping to increase public awareness and involvement in the democratic
process.
Annually, NDD awards an individual or individuals who have made a
major contribution both in and out of government and who exemplify the
goals and principles of the organization. Past honorees include Angier
Biddle Duke, Governor Hugh L. Carey, Eleanor Clark French, John V.
Lindsay, Loulette Samuels, Victor and Sarah Kovner, Elinor and Randolph
Guggenheimer, Peter Vallone, Dennis Rivera, Brian McLaughlin and Pamella
C. Harriman. The Citizens Achievement Award is awarded to outstanding
members of the community, last year the recipients were John
Catsimatidis and Robert Kennedy Jr. The Labor Achievement Award was
initiated for accomplished individuals in the field of Labor, this year
the recipients are Denis M. Hughes, President of the New York State
AFL-CIO and Randi Weingarten, President of the United Federation of
Teachers.
To keep members informed of activities and projects, NDD
publishes the quarterly newsletter, "NDD Reporter". The
newsletter includes articles of interest to NDD members; news about NDD
supported candidates and issues, a calendar of upcoming events, and
"Viewpoints", a series of articles expressing the opinions and
philosophies of NDD members.
NDD's membership consists of professionals and business people
from the New York City area. As a volunteer organization, NDD depends on
membership participation. Those members who wish to take a more active
role in NDD are always encouraged.
NDD is also active in national, state, and local campaigns,
directing volunteers and giving financial support. Fund-raising
receptions are held as part of an ongoing offer to assist Democratic
candidates with their fund-raising efforts. While NDD doesn't get
involved in primary contests, it does foster and support members'
involvement in campaigns of their choice.
NDD had a very active 2001 with the Congressional Update
Series featuring two Congresspersons at each breakfast. Representatives
Joseph Crowley, Carolyn Maloney, Jerrold Nadler, Charles Rangel, Ed
Towns and Anthony Weiner were among the notables that joined us in the
AM. The Statement of Principles, signed by all citywide candidates and
most City Council candidates, was a pledge to keep the campaigns focused
on the issues facing New York rather than degenerating to personal
attacks. Political Perspectives, a cable television debate program, had
guests from seven City Council districts debating the issues particular
to their districts. Conversations on America is a forum that covered the
topic of Freedom, Terrorism and Civil Liberties.
